Estate Planning

A will is a document that specifies who will receive your property after you pass and names an executor. You can specify certain family members receive particular properties, heirlooms, financial accounts, or other possessions. Document appointing a trusted person, usually a family member, with authority to make financial decisions for you in the event you are unable to do so. A power of attorney would allow someone to pay your bills and handle your finances while you are severely ill, in a coma, or otherwise incapacitated.
Also known as an Advanced Health Care Directive, this document allows you to appoint someone (your "agent") to speak for you in the event that you are unable. The powers granted to an agent under the Advanced Health Care Directive range from selecting health care providers and refusing life support to consenting to organ donation.
A trust is a property interest where one person, a trustee, manages the interest for a beneficiary. Some trusts are created during your lifetime and others at death. Trusts are used for, among other things, avoiding probate court proceedings, saving on estate tax, and giving more choices for distribution.
